Turning Layovers into Authentic Encounters

Unlike many typical travelers, I embrace the often-dreaded layovers that most people try to avoid. I prefer layovers lasting at least eight hours, providing me with the opportunity to wander aimlessly if I choose—stretching my legs, savoring traditional cuisines, observing people, and gaining a sense of the city. To me, it’s like an appetizer before the main course. In this instance, it’s Istanbul, Turkey, in the early morning hours between 6 AM – 8 AM. The city begins to stir as a soft golden light illuminates the day. Business owners prepare for both local and tourist patrons, morning routines commence, and everything comes to life.

While I often have an idea of what I want to see or do during these short stays in various locations, there are times, like in this instance, where I stay relatively close to the airport (under an hour) and walk around, capturing photos of whatever catches my eye or speaks to my spirit. One of my favorite pastimes is “people watching,” quietly absorbing the environment, a natural treat for someone like me. Adapting to unexpected situations and turning them into opportunities has become a regular practice in my travel routine. Learning to be flexible and shift perspective when plans don’t go as expected is crucial. I’ve realized that capturing an image is all about the moment, not the schedule. In seeking the silver lining when plans change, I have always found at least one.
